Tutoring & Academic Support

Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE)

HSU student speaking to adviserAt HSU, we believe the work you do in the classroom is only a part of the learning process. Regular class attendance and engagement with lectures, discussions, and readings are a necessary and vital portion of what is required for you to achieve academically.

But the process requires more… it requires regular work outside of the classroom. It requires taking ownership in the educational process by becoming an agent of your own learning.

CRLA LogoThe Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) is a certified College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program. This certification indicates that our tutor training meets an internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors. Our tutors are not only subject-matter experts; they are also trained on best practices for conducting successful sessions with their peers.

The ACE and ACE Writing Center offer free-of-charge opportunities for you to work one-on-one with a more academically experienced, trained, peer tutor to enrich your understanding and application of the concepts you are learning in the classroom. Utilizing the ACE should become a regular academic habit; it should not be viewed as a last minute, night-before-the-test cram session!

The ACE offers academic support in all areas, including:

  • Business
  • Literature
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Writing
  • More!

ACE Writing Center

Hardin Simmons TutoringThe goal of the WC is to help students gain maturity and confidence in their ever-growing writing skills. Students should not expect a proofreading service.  Although the WC does not offer quick fixes, the Aces do teach others how to proofread their own work.  Aces extend guidance and email professors a brief summary of the conference.  A student should come to the WC with an open mind and a willingness to challenge oneself as a writer.

Writing Center Aces are academically experienced students trained to help other students:

  • Identify areas of strength and understanding;
  • Set goals and prioritize academic needs;
  • Clarify and organize ideas;
  • Increase understanding in specific content areas;
  • Develop skills in reading, writing, revision, note-taking, studying, and test-prep;
  • More!

All ACE services will be delivered face to face. To schedule an appointment, open the ACE Course in Canvas and follow the instructions.

Hours of operation:

  • Sunday-Thursday: 5 p.m.-9 p.m. (Hours may vary per semester)
  • Fridays and Saturdays: By appointment only
